Volunteers are AFC’s greatest resource.

We rely on more than 400 volunteers who support all aspects of our organization. Many are also generous donors, further deepening their impact on our work. AFC prides itself on being a welcoming community, an impactful organization, and a fun place for volunteers to donate their time and talents. The services we provide are serious, but we know how to have a good time doing it!

I’m a medical professional. Do I have to be licensed in the state of VA to volunteer at AFC?2025-07-21T09:59:22-04:00

Yes, AFC is a standard medical facility. Clinical volunteers must be licensed to practice in Virginia. Virginia does now offer reciprocity for medical licenses with Maryland and the District of Columbia. Physicians already licensed in those jurisdictions can obtain a Virginia license through a more streamlined process. Additionally, Virginia does participate in the National Compact License for LPNs and RNs.

Depending on the profession, some Virginia licensing boards do offer a Volunteer Restricted License to Practice. These typically have lower fees, shorter processing time, and fewer continuing education requirements.

AFC does also have experience requirements. Physicians need to have been practicing for at least 4 years post-residency to volunteer with AFC. Nurse Practitioners need to have been practicing for at least 2 years post-graduation. Additionally, retired medical providers need to have practiced substantially in the last 4 years.

Does AFC host nurse practitioner preceptorships?2025-07-21T09:59:59-04:00

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our volunteer provided care, AFC is unable to host nurse practitioner preceptorships.

I am not a medical professional and do not speak Spanish. What volunteer roles are available to me at AFC?2025-07-08T21:34:13-04:00

We have several roles for non-Spanish speaking medical professionals, including exam room coordinators, reception, and AFC Ambassadors. See descriptions of each role below.

Additionally, we can utilize specific skills, such as marketing, data analytics, IT, and fundraising for one-time or seasonal opportunities, including our Annual Benefit Gala. Reach out to volunteer@arlingtonfreeclinic.org if you are interested in any of these opportunities.

Current Roles & Opportunities

AFC Ambassadors

AFC Ambassadors support AFC at events, engage in fundraising activities and item drives, and represent AFC at community events like the Arlington County Fair, Information Booths, and Volunteer Recruitment Events.

Medical, Psychiatric, & Dental Providers

Patient care is provided by volunteer primary and specialty care physicians, nurse practitioners, and dentists from the community. Some choose to see patients onsite at our clinic; others see AFC patients in their offices, gratis.

Licensed Counselors

Bilingual counselors are preferred as it makes patient communication easier, but it is not a requirement!

Diabetic Educators & Registered Dietitians

Providing education and support to our diabetic patients continues to be a top priority.

Pharmacists & Pharmacy Techs

Help in the pharmacy is currently at capacity, but we can use qualified pharmacists to provide diabetic education.

Dental Assistants & Hygienists

At this time, all dental assistant and hygienist volunteers must be bilingual (English/Spanish) as they typically also serve as an interpreter for the dentist.

RNs

Nurses assist with discharge instructions after appointments and keep our vaccine programs running strong!

MAs & EMTs

Perform intake at clinics rooming patients, doing vitals, medical histories, and mental health screenings.

Interpreters

We are always seeking more Spanish, Amharic, and Mongolian interpreters. Currently almost all interpreting work is being done on-site/in-person. There are some limited opportunities for remote interpreting either by phone or video call, depending on the appointment type.

Reception

The Receptionist is the first point of contact for all guests entering AFC during evening clinic sessions. They are responsible for greeting the patients, signing them in for appointments, distributing information as needed, and responding to general inquiries. They are essential for operating the clinic session efficiently. The Receptionist may assist with other clinic functions like setting up/cleaning up the kitchen, making phone calls, etc.

Scribes

Scribes assist physicians by documenting patient encounters and managing administrative tasks in a medical setting. The scribe program is distinct from the general volunteer program – find out specific details and how to apply

Development

Volunteers supporting AFC’s Development team assist with fundraising, grant writing, marketing, social media, data clean-up, and other projects that help advance our mission and strengthen community and donor engagement.
