Support Arlington Free Clinic’s mission using your language skills to assist with medical appointments during the summer break. AFC uses volunteer interpreters to assist with intake, discharge instructions, and patient appointments.
Interpreter Role
Volunteer Interpreters at Arlington Free Clinic are responsible for converting information from one spoken language (source) into another (target). The interpreter’s goal is for individuals to experience the target language as seamlessly as if it were the source language. “Summer Only” Volunteer Interpreters will onboard with the same standard training, but will commit to 10 weeks of service through the summer session.
Requirements:
- Pass a Spanish fluency screening
- Availability: June 1 to August 7
- Weekly shift commitment (3 hours)
Training
AFC interpreters must be fully bilingual; however, they are not expected to be trained medical interpreters.
AFC provides basic community medical interpreter training and has a library of supplemental resources for volunteers. All interpreters are required to shadow at least one other volunteer to have a full understanding of the process.
Timeline
- March 1 – April 30: Applications accepted
- May 15: Accepted applicants receive training material
- Week of June 1: First shift shadowing
